Mrs. Clumsy

Hi my name is Mrs. Clumsy.

Yeah, let me "paint a picture" for you. I hear the boys outside screaming. I run outside into our garage/schoolroom & then it happens. In slow motion I see them on their scooters laughing & playing, meanwhile I feel my armpit hit the edge of our deep freezer. I then feel my foot twist in an odd shape.

"Are you ok Momma?"

I couldn't breathe.

As soon as I could speak, I told them that I came to see what was wrong (since they were yelling). Feeling guilty, "Bruce" apologized.

I'm not 100% sure if it's broken or not. Even if it was, there's nothing the doctor can do about it. But let me say, being clumsy HURTS.

Science Project: Clouds

This past week in Science, we learned all about weather. The boys really enjoyed making a cloud diagram with my friend Amy's favorite thing-cotton balls (I kid. I kid.)

Miscellaneous Happenings

Whew! What an eventful few days.

We went to the doctor & was reassured (& referred to a specialist if needed). I was pleasantly surprised that the doctor was pro-homeschooling "especially for a child with ADHD that doesn't require medication." So that's been done.

I've still been itching, but overall the crazy bug bites are officially dried up. I look like I have scabies or something & you wouldn't believe some of the crazy looks I've gotten in public; but I don't care! I don't feel like I want to claw my skin off-so it's all good.

We've been working in our garden getting all of these fat grub worms out. They've been feasting on my tomato & broccoli plants. So we put them in our back yard, right under the bird feeder. It didn't take long before the birds were swooping down. We enjoyed the show. Take that grub worms!

Now we're enjoying some red tomatoes! Here's our "summer windowsill"...

These are the cherry tomatoes that aren't quite ripe yet.

Getting the help we need

We have an appointment tomorrow with a psychiatrist or psychologist, I've never really understood the difference other than one prescribes medicine. That fact doesn't matter to us since we no longer medicate for ADHD.

So, again, we have an appointment in the morning with a doctor. We're having "Bruce" re-evaluated. His first evaluation was done when he was 5 years old. He was in public school's pre-k program & upon threats to have him kicked out, I was forced to have him evaluated. He was diagnosed with ADHD & "the unnamed LD". Yep, they just stated an LD. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not crazy (no pun intended) about getting my kid labeled. But it will help me & him both if I know exactly what to do, as a parent & teacher, to help him with his obvious comprehension issues -AKA the "unnamed LD".

I have my own theories, but you have to have a degree to diagnose. But since I'm feeling rambly, I'll continue. Feel free to click away.

I think, from being a parent with him 24/7 & even teaching him, that he's dysgraphic/dyscalculia. He see's numbers backwards. Just the other day, we went to Chick-Fil-A. There was a sign on the play area that said you must be 54" or shorter to play. "Bruce" asked if he was 45"? We went back & forth, 45" right? Several times he stated yes. He saw 45". This occurs more often than not.

As far as the comprehension issues-he has trouble retaining/retelling a sequence of events (even instructions)-I have no idea how to help him. I've been working on giving smaller amounts of instructions but it doesn't seem to help. He's not progressing. Someone that's about to be 10 years old should be able to go to my nightstand & get me the pink cup & put it in the sink. He loses me at the nightstand. "Get the what?"

The ADHD is under control. With homeschooling, he's not required to sit like a zombie. I can deal with the hyperactivity, it's not an issue for our household. His impulsiveness on the other hand hinders him. We've tried to explain that leaning backwards from the top of "the boat" can make him fall. He doesn't seem to care. He just likes "to have fun". I sometimes wonder if my oldest will ever be able to live & thrive as an adult. I could see him driving & seeing a squirrel, "oh look" (looks away) CRASH!

PLUS, he's still struggling with dealing with the death of my mom. It's been a little over a year since her death & we feel that he needs some counseling.

I know there is more help "out there" than medicines that cause a vast majority of other health problems. So, keep us in mind & please, if you have any resources that you'd like to share with me. PLEASE feel free.

Pickle Makin'

We've had a great cucumber bounty so far, so we're trying our hand at pickle making.

We only made 4 jars (reused jars). There are:

(2) spears
(1) hamburger chip
(1) sandwich slices (my favorite)

They're quick processing so we'll know how they taste tomorrow.

If I get food poisoning & you don't hear from me, the pickles did it!
